With A-levels results now out, no matter which university you will be moving to, the excitement will be building day by day (and maybe a few nerves). Preparing yourself for the move to university and student accommodation can be daunting but The Store Room’s Leicester team are here to help, and make the transition as smooth as possible.
Decision Time
Space in your university room will be a premium, whether you’re allocated a room in halls or a room in private accommodation so you might need to make some tough choices. We have created a list of essentials but of course, you might want to add to this list.
- A basic first aid kit and medication
- Any stationery and folders for your lectures
- Toiletries (you’ll need all the essentials like loo roll, soap, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, deodorant, and makeup remover)
- Cleaning products (specifically for bathroom and shared areas)
- Towels (hand towels, body towels and maybe even a hair towel)
- Bedding (check the size of the bed you will have – you will want to take at least 2 sets so you can use one while the other is in the wash).
- Washing essentials (laundry detergent and fabric softener or all-in-one pods)
- A clothes-drying solution (for example a clothes horse or a washing line – don’t forget pegs!)
- Clothes hangers
- Clothing (make sure to pack for the upcoming autumn and winter months, so you will need a winter coat and winter boots if you won’t be heading home before Christmas break.
- Sleeping essentials (Pyjamas, dressing gown and slippers – always handy in the event of a fire alarm!)
- Cooking utensils and crockery (try to get things with patterns on them, so you will know they are yours)
- Electronics (these will be personal to you, but a few that we have thought of are laptop, phone, chargers, gaming console, hair dryer, hair accessories, TV, monitors etc). You will also definitely want to bring one or two extension cords to ensure convenient access to power in your room.

Once you have decided what items you want to bring, you might need to start getting creative with storage ideas. Self Storage Units
While this isn’t something you need to be thinking about now, when you reach the end of term, you might need to move out of your accommodation. If you are unable to leave your personal items behind, a practical solution you could consider is renting a small storage locker or unit for all your items. Additionally, if you have friends who are in the same situation, you could share the storage unit, which not only simplifies logistics, but will also be more affordable.
