More Cheese Gromit?
Nick Park, the creator of Wallace and Gromit, was born in Preston. He studied Art and Design at Preston College, and it’s said that the character Wallace was inspired by his old English teacher. Preston City Council and Nick Park unveiled a bronze statue of the iconic pair in September, just outside Preston Markets – be sure to have a picture with them, but maybe don’t wear ‘The Wrong Trousers’.
‘Freddie’ Flintoff
Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff, the former international cricketer, was born in Preston. He represented the UK in 227 international matches, and won BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award in 2005 after the Ashes win. Now the TV and radio star is father to four children, and paid tribute to his hometown by calling his youngest Preston!
Any Peaky Blinders Fans?
Preston’s beautiful Hoghton Tower featured in the popular BBC One drama in season 5 of Peaky Blinders – representing St Hilda’s Orphanage. Peaky Blinders is set in Birmingham during the 1920s and covers the fictional lives of the ‘Peaky Blinders Gang’ – so called because they would stitch razor blades into the peaks of their flat caps.

There is a row of red telephone boxes along Preston’s Market Street. It is the longest continuous row of the classic British icon. The telephone boxes have recently been refurbished, including repainting, and repairing broken windows. Interestingly you can now rent them, and they even have planning permission for retail use! What a fabulous way to keep these cultural British icons in use!
